Indian Premier League (IPL) team Delhi Capitals’ (DC) assistant coach Shane Watson believes that his team needs to be consistent with the bat following their seventh defeat in the ongoing IPL season.
Delhi, who lost by 27 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Wednesday, fought hard but couldn’t chase the total of 168.
Watson believed that the target of 168 was not difficult but a poor start of losing three wickets inside the powerplay was a major blow.
"We thought 167 was a par score on the wicket in Chennai. It was important for us to get off to a decent start, but unfortunately, we couldn't do that. It was also hard for us to rebuild after losing three wickets in the powerplay," Watson said.
Before a loss against CSK, DC registered a victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) where they chased a total of 181 in 16.4 overs, thanks to a blistering inning of 87 (45) by the English opener Phil Salt.
"Everything clicked really well against RCB. Unfortunately, Davey wasn't able to get through the first over. Then we lost Salt and Marsh as well. So, things just didn't work out against CSK," the former Australian cricketer said.
When talking about what DC needs to improve at, he specifically mentioned the top-order of the team as they have been inconsistent.
"We've got to just keep working on getting better. We were excellent with the ball for the majority of CSK's innings. We have to find a way to execute our skills with the bat for a longer period of time," Watson said.
"If we can do that, as we have done at certain stages of the tournament, then we can produce good batting performances," he concluded.
Delhi Capitals currently sits at the last position in the IPL points table with only four victories in 11 matches. They only managed to win eight out of the possible 22 points.
